Ear is the dipthong “ea”

Anglo-Saxon rune poem (from ragweedforge.com)

The grave is horrible to every knight,
when the corpse quickly begins to cooland is laid in the bosom of the dark earth.Prosperity declines, happiness passes awayand covenants are broken

Ear signifies that this week is about endings and death. Things have reached their completion, and will not progress any further beyond that. My first thought reached out to the various spiritual beings who govern death, dying and the realms of the dead, from various pagan Gods, to the very popular folk saint, Santa Muerte (Saint Death). A favorite quote that often comes to mind when contemplating Ear and it’s effects, especially as it applies to people who engage in a magico-spiritual practice comes from The Invisibles by Grant Morrison. A transgendered brazilio-mexican sorceress who goes by the name epithet Lord Fanny, says to the foe “ I am a sorcerer, and death is my ally, not my enemy.” I have often contemplated that phrase, and it’s implications and an answer came to me about what that means. Death is part of the process of change. Something new cannot be created, unless something old passes away, and is destroyed. The caterpillar no longer exists when it becomes a butterfly. The tree is gone when it becomes the chair. The marble slab becomes the valued statue. In each of those things, part of the process of becoming, something about them experienced death, and they can never go back to being what they were before.

Ear is the grave, death, and decay. It is a rune that indicates that something has reached it end, and must now be put to rest. The problem I am having is figuring out what. What has reached it’s end, what is complete and can go no further, It could be a mutltitude of things, or a single thing that is very important. It occurred to me as sign of this time of the year, the dark season in the Northern Hemisphere, when the underworld and the lands of the dead come close and claim what is theirs. But it could also be a sign that other things have reached their terminus, and the question is for me, what is it?

let’s just say, today has not really been my most favorite of days. But I think there is something here, speaking to autumn equinox, and even-ness of hours of day and night, turning into a deepening darkness until the winter solstice. The dark tide is arriving, and the summer of the deceased comes

Today is Ear, the rune of the Grave, symbolizing death, decay and the end of all things. Not the most pleasant of runes, is it? What is strongly apparent to me, is that today is the last day of work, before a week of vacation. Interestingly enough, many other people are on vacation day, as today is the day that usually marks the end of summer vacation, Labor Day (Huzzah for Unions!) People will have been getting in the last of the summer activities, bbq’s beaches, pool parties and picnics, because after today the weather will decline from the bright warm summer, into cool autumn (even in here in Southern California, things can be cooler. Yes, that means 70 instead of 80, but hey, cooler is cooler). The end of the lunar cycle is also coming, as this Wednesday is the complete occultation of the moon (that is to say a new, or dark, moon). It does seem that the end is coming in many ways.

The end is here. The grave isn’t always a bad thing, only when it is the end to something valued and treasured. When it is the end of the unpleasant or malefic, then it is a benefit to whoever was afflicted by the malefic force. To that purpose, Ear can be constructively used, eroding and decaying old and unwanted things. It can bring an end to curses, it can stop bad habits, it can wither the bad neighbors who treat you with common decency, and bring an end to their unpleasantness.

The divination for June 2010 indicates Ear reversed. Ear reversed shows that the influence of Ear (the slow acting force of decay and corrosion) has been temporarily halted. While contemplating this in my journal this morning, I came to two conclusions.

1) On one hand it can be seen as something that is being held onto and maintained past it’s time of usefulness or relevance. Something about you is just being held onto, when it really needs to be let go. Since it is for a whole month, it might be something that have attached a great deal of importance to, and need to release by degrees. It might also be a multitude of lesser things. An extreme image of this influence that comes to mind is “Hoarding.”
2) It could also be a stabilizing force. By holding the decaying force in abeyance, it allows for things to slowly build up, and become stronger and more durable. It is a moment of rest, and also of healing and recovery, before the process begins anew, allow the stronger to establish itself so that things don’t collapse as the weaker elements are purged away.
I am not terribly sure which it is, but there is no reason why it could not be both exercising their influence.

Ear is the rune of decay, erosion and death. It is often very slow acting force, but inexorable and persistent, and once directed, will continue to its work, however slow, until it is completed. If often signifies death, but can also indicate that need to release and let go, as something has reached it’s end, and clinging to it will not keep it around any longer. Of course, even a seemingly “malefic” rune can be beneficial. When harmful things are applied to harmful things, they stop or resist each other, holding harmful forces in check. It can also be the lessening of misfortune and trouble, allowing for more freedom and openness. By eroding away that which is doing harm, beneficial and helpful forces can enter in.

Ear is the rune of week, speaks to what has started today and will continue for the next three weeks. As most occult-minded readers will know, it is the beginning of Mercury Retrograde. During this time, it appears that the planet Mercury is moving backwards in the sky. As Ear represents the forces of death, decay and entropy, it marks the disintegration that occurs under all the things that are influenced by Mercury. While this confusion is happening for most though, to those who are diligent, focused and take the time to review, re-read, and re-examine, life will flow more smoothly. Even as the decline sets in, if you are skilled, you can move with the entropy. At the end of the Retrograde, unresolved or lingering elements might be removed, and allow you begin anew, which is part of the mystery of Mercury Retrograde.

Ear is the sound “ea”

Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem (from ragweedforge.com)

The grave is horrible to every knight,
when the corpse quickly begins to cooland is laid in the bosom of the dark earth.Prosperity declines, happiness passes awayand covenants are broken.

Ear is often translated as grave or tomb. The stanza describes the image often associated with the early medieval mindset about death.

Esoterically, Ear is also about death. It is the slow decay and death of things both physical and immaterial, and of course how all things end. In a reading that is what Ear reveals, that something is ending, or that what is said is the final say in the question at hand.

Like Symbols of Death in various divinatory systems, it doesn’t necessarily mean immediate or personal death of the querent. Death happens in life all the time, Plants die and retreat during the autumn and winter, or are harvest and die to make grain and other food stuffs. Animals are slaughtered for food. Habits die, relationships die, periods and phases of life come to an end. Just realizing the part that will die that needs to die is tricky sometimes.

As a runeworker and a sorcerer, to me Death is my ally. In order to work change on the physical level, things need to be able to change. That means bringing an end to things, which is part of the cycle of change. Creation, Preservation, Destruction. But before Creation can occur, what was present before needs to be destroyed, it needs to die.
